1968 — Today

Dan Starts Training With His First Buddhist Llama

Dan begins his half-century of research into Eastern traditions that continue to this day. This includes studying Mahamudra meditation with numerous Tibetan lamas; Burmese mindfulness meditation with originator Mahasi Sayadaw; plus Indo-Tibetan concentration and insight meditation with root teacher Geshe Wangyal. Dan has spent decades translating meditation texts from Tibetan and Sanskrit, which he’s complimented with research as a Western psychologist into intensive concentration meditation and the nature of the awakened mind. He has taught intensive meditation retreats for more than 30 years, both alone and in collaboration with Tibetan meditation masters.

1977 — Today

Harvard Medical School Teaching

Dan begins his work on the faculty of Harvard Medical School in various roles that encompass running two departments in one of Harvard’s teaching hospitals for a decade. His tenure sees him teach the extended education program for entrepreneurs, executives, doctors and judges on performance excellence (including peak performance and concentration training). Dan continues to serve on faculty to this day as an Associate Clinical Professor in Psychology.

1990 — Today

Forensics Law & Expert Witness for War Crimes Tribunal

Dan begins his work on trauma and abuse, in which he is considered a legal expert and the recipient of awards from multiple professional societies including the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Psychiatry and Law. Throughout the ‘90s he serves as an expert witness on 70 priest abuse cases and more than 200 child abuse cases. In 2000 he commences work as an expert witness on the International War Crimes Tribunal for the Prosecution of war criminals of the former Yugoslavia. His testimony helped establish the standard of evidence for evaluating severe war atrocities. His testimony also contributed to three state supreme court cases on the reliability of children’s testimony relating to sexual abuse.

As a Senior Meditation Master in Buddhism & Bon

• Dan begins his half-century of research into Eastern traditions that continue to this day. This includes studying Mahamudra meditation with numerous Tibetan lamas; Burmese mindfulness meditation with its originator Mahasi Sayadaw; plus Indo-Tibetan concentration and insight meditation with the abbot of the Dalai Lama’s monastery, Denma Locho Rinpoche.
• Dan spends decades translating meditation texts from Tibetan and Sanskrit, complemented with research as a Western psychologist into intensive concentration meditation and the nature of the awakened mind. He has the only scientific study identifying the specific neurocircuitry markers of the awakened mind.
• He continues to teach intensive meditation retreats for 48 years, both alone and in collaboration with various Tibetan lamas.
• For the past ten years he has been translating Bon Great Completion advanced meditation practices under the guidance of H.H. the 33rd Menri Trizin, the lineage-holder of the indigenous Tibetan Bon tradition.
• He is translating these very advanced cave and hermitage yogi meditation practices and putting them in a form that can be understood and practiced in the West before they disappear in their indigenous context.
