Performance Excellence Overview

There has been about 50 years of research on performance excellence, the field actually started with research on top performing athletes and now there is research on performance excellence for surgeons, for judges, for CEOs of big companies, and we know a lot about the conditions which create performance excellence at the worksite. Secondly, has been about 30 years of research on positive psychology, research on what contributes to the good life, such as, compassion, gratitude, forgiveness, and other prosocial behaviors such as finding satisfaction and happiness in everyday life, well being and positivity in everyday life.  I will be drawing upon that body of research. Thirdly In Tibetan there are 100,000 volumes written on states of mind collected over 8,000 years that makes our Western psychology of 200 years dwarf in comparison to the wisdom that has been collected about states of mind.  I will be drawing upon that literature and that wisdom as part of what informs me about my views of this course.

Most professional athletes eventually come around to the idea that mental imagery training and visualizing ideal performance actually helps them perform better. This module helps you learn how to apply it in your daily life.

We explore the four main prototypes of attachment in both children and adults: secure attachment, avoidant (or dismissing) attachment, resistant to ambivalent attachment in children and anxious-preoccupied attachment in adults, finally, disorganized attachment.

This next teaching is on hardiness and resilience training.  Some of the work that was done in the 1970s on hardiness was done by Suzanne Kobasa, Sal Maddi, Steve Kahn and others.  What they did was they looked at the health of executives in high demand job situations, jobs where there was too much to do and the demands on the executive were impossible.

"This teaching is on forgiveness and the importance of forgiveness. Forgiveness means that we acknowledge that we have some transgression that's been done against us and it has damaged us in some way."
