Complete Training Overview

These teachings on concentration training come from a long line of lineage teachings in Tibetan Buddhism. They pass from heart to heart, from generation to generation. They include teachings on the nature of the mind, how to concentrate and how to awaken the mind to its real nature. We want to begin by respecting the source from where we've got these precious teachings from.

There are several initial skills of concentration that we want to develop.  Learn to train concentration for any part of your life so you can not be so distracted and sustain focus in a business meeting or to train a surgeon to be more concentrated when he's doing an operation or to train judges to be more focused and less bored as they sit on the bench managing all distractions of a court room, a busy courtroom.  So, in any area of life concentration training is an essential ingredient to everyday living as I see it.  It is necessary to train it so we develop the skill especially in this modern culture when there are so many multimedia distractions facing us.

One of the most frequent complaints of beginning meditators is they find themselves getting distracted by thought or they find themselves intentionally chasing after interesting thoughts as well as getting distracted by extraneous thought.  Thought is something that gets elaborated more and more as we chase after it.  The Tibetan theory of mind says that thoughts all begin with simple products of mind without any content.  They are called mind moments.  Little bursts of energy or movement in the mind at high speeds

The Buddhist Abhidharma literature is literature about the nature of mind and in the Abhidharma literature they make a very important point.  It is said that the techniques that are used to work with negative states of mind and the techniques used to work with positive states of mind complement each other but they are not reducible to each other. This teaching is about developing the right positive states of mind in order to potentiate meditation practice in general and concentration training specifically.

After you learn the basics of concentration training presumably you settle into a daily routine of practice. However, the effects of busyness and the other distractions of daily life have an erosive effect on those practices. So, you need some way to protect the gains from what you're learning in concentration training from the erosive effect of busyness and distractions and you do that with a premeditation routine.

The best way of measuring the results of concentration training is the percentage of the session that the person stays on the concentration object as compared to staying on being distracted by one thing or another.

We explore the four main prototypes of attachment in both children and adults: secure attachment, avoidant (or dismissing) attachment, resistant to ambivalent attachment in children and anxious-preoccupied attachment in adults, finally, disorganized attachment.

Behind the elephant there is a meditator and he has two tools in his hand. One is the rope of concentration. He's going to tie the rope of concentration onto the elephant so the elephant is tied up to a concentration object, in this case, the rising and falling of the breath. But the other tool is the elephant prod of metacognitive intelligence.

This next series of teachings is on insight meditation, the insights you get into the nature of the mind through meditating.  In the earliest Buddhism, Theravada Buddhism, the Buddhism of Shakyamuni Buddha, there were three main insights that were documented. Emptiness Meditation is like putting your socks in the washing machine and looking for that missing sock. You know its there you just can't find it,

The last of the three ordinary emptiness is in series is called emptiness of time and also emptiness of space because time and space are related. This is a big shift because it shifts you from operating out of time or temporal information processing to operating out of simultaneous mind or parallel processing.  In other words, you shift out of operating things and operating out of things in time to a larger view of the world where everything is interconnected and you're all at once and you measure progress in terms of degrees of all at once-ness, everything being here simultaneously.
